If that's the case couldn't have Slott's ASM continued with the same numbering since he's still writing about a Spider-Man and outside of Stegman he's working with the same artists?

None of that changes anything, though. As I said, we make what we think is the best choice in each individual case. Doing one thing for Spider-Man doesn’t mean we’re bound to do the exact same thing for every other title. In fact, the opposite is true–we judge each situation individually, and come to the best decision that we can.
