"we were changing the material in the collected edition and leaving things out “to force us to have to buy the individual issues as well!” Couldn't you add an addendum page to the back that contains that info in like a "Page 6: See Spider-Man 347 to see when Peter found out XYZ". I still don't get why it would be so tough, and I honestly don't have a dog in this fight just logistically can't figure out why three isn't a happy middle ground here when it seems so obvious

Again, though, running those annotations in a collection becomes exclusionary to the readers following the material in that format. This becomes a circular argument if you follow it long enough. We’ve got a happy middle ground at this point–we largely don’t do it, and most readers are fine with that.
