"In a world in which everything we do is collected in book editions, having footnotes within those books that refer to individual issues of the serialized comic comes across to many as exclusionary, and even a bit useless" What confuses me is couldn't you store the pages digitally without captions, then send a version of the page over for print that has a layer of captions over them? You'd then still have the original without captions stored for collected purposes.
