In fairness Tom mutants were still absolutely a minority prior to Decimation. If we believe the figures gay people represent 10% of the population and we are still a minority. I have to say Decimation was by far the storyline that hated most in twenty years of reading. I thought it was totally reductive to the X-Line. Didn't mean the stories that came after were actually bad but they were pretty one note and just about survival.
Not in terms of the number of characters being used in our stories, though. It got to the point where there was virtually a few mutants on every streetcorner.
