Hey, Tom! I know you're only an comics editor, so I'm just one comic community member asking a fellow comic community member a question: What is your opinion on a possible Black Human Torch in the upcoming F4 reboot? I personally think it shouldn't happen; mostly because Johnny has an iconic blue-eyed, blonde-haired, all-American, White privileged male look, which is a big part of his character and concept. It saddens me to hear others call me racist because of a personal preference.

I think that if the actor can handle the role, and the producers of the film hire him, then nothing else matters. At the end of the day, audiences will either accept the character in the final movie or they won’t, same as with any other performance. I do think that we comic fans tend to be a bit more paranoic when it comes to the casting in super hero films–I can’t recall a time in my life when, say, a first image of an actor in a super heroic role was revealed, and there wasn’t outcry about how the part had been miscast, and how this would spell the end of all super hero movies. And in many of these instances, the same people end up liking the finished film. I do think that there’s nothing endemic to the Human Torch that says to me that he must be played by a caucasian actor. There are probably characters for whom race is a crucial component (I don’t think you’d want a non-black actor to play T'Challa, for example), but I don’t think the Torch is one of them.
