Hi Tom, more of an opinion question. Do you believe that Dr. Doom is noble at the core and keeps to his word, as depicted by Lee/Kirby, Byrne, and others or that he is an evil villain so deluded in his machinations the concept of nobility is impossible, like how Mark Waid wrote him and perceived him to be. Thank you.
I feel like you’re trying to stack your argument here a little bit by mentioning those creators. But especially if you look back at the Stan and Jack Doom appearances, you’ll see that he lies all the time, and is despicable. His veneer of respectability and honor is one of convenience–it’s how he wants to see himself, but when push comes to shove, he’ll do whatever self-serving thing is necessary. I prefer Doom and most other villains as nuanced characters, with the potential to make interesting choices and to surprise people by their behavior. But that doesn’t mean that their sense of honor isn’t situational–that’s part of what makes them villains, after all.
