  • Diversity at Marvel

Hi there, I know diversity (or lack thereof) around race has come up as an issue before in Marvel comics, both of its characters & creators.  I was wondering if there is a position within Marvel (or the larger parent company) that talks about this issues, like a diversity consultant or “specialist”? If not, ever consider bringing one in?

I think Marvel’s position has always been to try to reflect the reality of the world around us, and that extends to the make-up of the inhabitants of that world. So in terms of characters and creators, we try to cast the net wide and to represent all types of people. That all said, we’re also a commercial enterprise, and one whose fictional bedrock was created mostly in the Early 1960s, so it can be difficult to get newer characters of any background to catch on and click with a large enough audience to succeed long-term in the same way that a Spider-Man or an Iron Man has. But we continue to try to do this.
