  • I'm enjoying "Dark Avengers" & "Avengers Arena"'s arcs more than AoU's. The alternate-reality of DA's world is clear, and AA takes place in a small, contained area. Both involve third-tier characters that can conceivably die "for real." I don't know what's going on in AoU, and I know the first 5 years of post-AoU continuity won't be "rebuilding and repopulating the planet." So I don't know that these people have anything at stake. Could you talk in general about that type of creative problem?

I think it’s all about verisimilitude, really. Nobody expected the next five years post “Days of Future Past” to be about overthrowing the Sentinels and breaking up the mutant camps, but that didn’t change the effectiveness of the entry into that story being an extended sequence with Kate Pryde in that world. AGE OF ULTRON is a different story in a different era, so it’s not a precise comparison, but same sort of thing. One thing I’ve found on the part of a certain percentage of the current audience is that they seem to want all of their story answers right away, and they get a little bit anxious if they don’t have them. So a story like AGE OF ULTRON that drops people right in the middle of things is a bit unsettling. Plus, y'know, the Internet.
