Isn't it a bit irritating dealing with the readers? Because, from what I've observed, comic book fans are so completely annoying that most of the time they only consider getting in touch with writers, editors and artists to complain about this or that tiny, irrelevant detail they find offensive for some reason, not to mention the arrogance of saying you guys haven't put any thoughts on your job. How can you handle it?

Most of our readers are great. They’re enthusiastic people from all walks of life who’ve connected in a primal, emotional way with the stories that we do and the characters that we write about, and have made them a part of their lives. It’s a pleasure to interact with them.

Sometimes, some of these readers can get understandably upset about something that happens–the death of Peter Parker being a very good example of that–and express themselves in a visceral, emotional manner. Also, the Internet as a communications medium tends to dehumanize communication, and bring out the worst in everybody, because you’re not actually seeing or genuinely interacting with the people you’re “speaking” with–it’s all just cold type on a screen.

But if I didn’t think that it was worthwhile, I wouldn’t spend so much time doing it. One of the great things about Marvel over the years is the interaction we’ve had with our fans and readers, so it’s something that we take seriously and enjoy doing.
