I can’t really speak for the specifics of what the editors of those periods might have been dealing with. But I can say that, in each case, you’re talking about an earlier time when the doorway to the depiction of alternative lifestyles wasn’t as wide open as it is these days. So outing a character as being gay would have been considered a much bigger deal.
