I think that it's pretty obvious that Scott Lobdell and Chuck Austen both intended for Iceman to come out as gay. My question is why did it take until Bendis' run for editorial to allow that storyline to happen?
I can’t really speak for the specifics of what the editors of those periods might have been dealing with. But I can say that, in each case, you’re talking about an earlier time when the doorway to the depiction of alternative lifestyles wasn’t as wide open as it is these days. So outing a character as being gay would have been considered a much bigger deal.
