"not unless we do as you suggest, and cater to an aging and dying audience of old men." I reject the premise of this answer. I believe it's completely possible to do stories that are both enjoyable to the existing audience and enjoyable and accessible to new readers. That you have to choose between one or the other is a fallacy. Thinking they could sacrifice their base readership to attract new readers was one of DC's biggest mistakes with The New 52. You can easily attract both audiences.

I believe that we do attract both audiences in most cases. But when forced to choose between the future and dying, crabby old men, you know where I come out–and I AM a dying, crabby old man!
