Hey Tom, can you tell me if I'm in the wrong here? I'm someone who likes that Marvel is trying to be more diverse but sometimes the execution turns me off and I feel like I get tossed in with the racists for wanting to talk about quality instead of some ratio. Of course, I am also someone who thought the X-Men as a minority analogy is a legacy of an older time and doesn't really hold up since the direction it took from the late 1970s onward. Just wanted your opinions on this kind of discussion.
I think it’s completely acceptable to express opinions about the work. The place where people slide down the slippery slope into semi-conscious bigotry is where they insist on it being this-vs-that. If we do a crappy issue of MS MARVEL or CAPTAIN AMERICA, I think you can express that without it becoming about Carol Danvers or Steve Rogers–at the point where it does, the conversational nexus shifts to being about white super heroes vs non-white super heroes.
