It isn’t really the writers who make that determination, it’s the readers. It’s not as though those writers eradicated thought balloons–they’re still there, a tool in the toolbox for any writer that wants to employ them. But because of the changing tastes and expectations of the audience, they are seen most often as being juvenile and old-fashioned by today’s readers. In recent memory Rick Remender experimented with using them in UNCANNY AVENGERS, and Brian Bendis experimented with using them in MIGHTY AVENGERS, and in both instances they soon moved away from using them because the reaction was so tepid. But if somebody wanted to use them tomorrow, there they are!
