Regardless of your opinion of Maximum Carnage, it was the last half-decent Spider-Man story until the Heroes Return relaunch in 1998.

If you liked it, then you don’t need to defend it to me.

But given that it came out only a short time before Heroes Return, that’s not really saying a whole lot.
