Something where instead of gaining powers, Hulk becomes a lukemia patient, Captain America is just a frozen corpse who could not be brought back to life and is featured in a museum, the X-men are people with debilitating disabilities who are stuck on life support and Peter Parker just got bit by a spider and got a lump on his hand that went away in a day or two?

    (Actually, it sounds very much like RUINS, the project that Warren Ellis wrote back around 1995.)
