Ref: Jean being BFFs with Storm and Wolverine - In X-Factor, during Inferno, Jean absorbed the memories of the Phoenix AND Madelyne Pryor, in essence having lived their lives including her own. So, while technically she did not pal around with the X-men during the entire Phoenix kerfuffle, the memories she internalized ensured that it was *always* Jean–even when it wasn’t. (This is also why Jean considers Cable her “son”)

Kind of a “Comics, Everybody!” point, I admit, but its fairly straightforward as these things go for telepaths.
