One thing I've noticed is that regardless of sales, people on message boards hate stylized art and prefer realistic art like Alex Ross. I for one like variety and I dislike my entertainment resembling reality too closely. It's like saying that Picasso's art was horrible because it wasn't anatomically correct or that Jackson Pollack was lazy.

I don’t know that people on message boards really agree on what constitutes realistic art. It seems to me that whomever an individual likes they’ll label as realistic, and whomever they don’t like becomes cartoony–with no great consistency. Alex Ross, your example, may well be perhaps the only exception.
