  • How do variant covers affect your royalty system? Say you do a 1:100 variant cover where a retailer has to buy 100 of the regular cover to get the variant. Some stores are going to get that cover because they were going to buy 100 copies anyway, and some are going to get it by deliberately buying extra copies of the regular cover. It seems like in the 1st case, the interior team should get the royalties, but the in the 2nd case the cover artist should get them. How do you sort that out fairly?

The cover artist is paid for their cover, like any cover artist. But the incentive pool goes to the interior creators. That’s the deal going in.
