From what I understand, DC needed to do the New 52 because the only comics of theirs which were selling were Batman and Green Lantern and DC needed a way to make Superman, Flash, Green Arrow, Nightwing and Wonder Woman popular again. Is this accurate or was it because DC's continuity was a mess, particularly with Hawkman and the various Vertigo titles?
i think that “needed” isn’t quite the proper term here.
DC chose to do the New 52 as a way of hopefully streamlining their continuity and characters and interesting more people in Superman, Flash, Green Arrow, etc, but it wasn’t something that had to be done, any more than any storytelling decision that we make has to be done. It is a choice, and in their analysis at that point, what they thought to be the best move for them.
