Some (not all!) of the controversy over One More Day was about Peter making such a huge sacrifice to save Aunt May. Was there ever any discussion of choosing another victim? (I felt like it would have made more sense if he had done it to save Mary Jane's life, but when an amateur says a story would have worked better another way, the professionals usually know a good reason why that's not true.) Why did it need to be Aunt May, specifically?
There was no other victim who would have made sense and worked in the same way.
It could not be Mary Jane, in that she had to be part of the decision-making process, an equal partner in making that choice. That doesn’t work if she’s the one at stake.
And nobody else is as central to Peter’s life on an emotional level as Aunt May.
