What about making a cosmic entity, like Galactus but a devourer or time, and just say he ate like 1965-1995, and that's why the characters are all so much younger than they should be?

Sure, that would be plausible and easy to understand and accept for people starting to read comics.
Also, nobody and nothing could swallow 1968.
