So I see that a lot of the retcons and reboots at DC and Marvel come from the idea that events in ast comics are too tied to their era (World War II, the Cold War, etc.) My question is why is that a problem? Who says comics have to be set in the present all of the time? Many of my favorite stories take place in the past. If Magneto is tied to World War II, why not just set every new X-Men story in the decades following the war?
While that might work fine for you as a reader, history shows us that most readers are more invested in the characters and situations if they are taking place in a contemporary setting. So while you could, say, keep Spider-Man in the 1960s, the audience for such a version of Spidey would be relatively small as compared to all of those who like to read about him in 2015. The good news is that, as a fictional character, there’s no reason why Spidey can’t always continue to be contemporary.
