  • 'Looking at longer works would also provide the opportunity for longer, more thoughtful, more contemplative analyses of the work.' True but, by then, would a review matter to people? At that point, the instant-gratification crowd will have read that work, and others that followed. The review becomes like one of those books that people don't buy because it doesn't 'count'. It's not in continuity, it doesn't matter. It's an old review, it doesn't matter.

    I suppose it depends on what you’re reviewing, but we sell and continue to sell our collected editions for a very long time in many cases. So clearly people remain interested in them. Besides which, if you’re only doing the reviews for attention in the first place, you’re probably doing them for the wrong reason–and doing a slap-dash job because you feel you have to move quickly doesn’t make that job any less slap-dash.
