'don’t get me started on comic book criticism. These days, the level of critical discourse in terms of reviewers is that of a chimpanzee. Critical acclaim is only worthwhile when applied with critical acumen' I think the problem here lies in the nature of comics these days. How does one review a monthly Hickman book when it's so reliant on its ongoing nature. And sure, you could review the collection later, but at that point a review is somewhat unnecessary. But I do think comics needs a Ebert.

I do think that it’s legitimate to review collections of work, especially for stories that are longer than a single issue. That’s how they were constructed, and that’s really how they are ultimately meant to be read. There’s no rule that says the monthly releases need to be reviewed immediately. Looking at longer works would also provide the opportunity for longer, more thoughtful, more contemplative analyses of the work.
