Reading all these ideas on how to keep Magneto rooted to the WWII era has me thinking that it would be so much easier to simply set the Marvel Universe in a "neverwhere" setting filled with modernity and anachronisms as needed for the various characters; mould each individual setting to fit the characters instead of trying to force them into being constantly up-to-date with reality. I've always felt this was one of the biggest strengths of Batman: The Animated Series.

I think that works for Batman, who already lives in a fictional city. But not for the Marvel characters, who are at their best when they are rooted in the real world in which we all live. The thing is, the sliding timescale isn’t a problem except to the relatively small number of fans who like to think this deeply about this stuff–and even for them, it’s not an issue most of the time. So there isn’t any need to change the way we operate. Whereas putting the Avengers into a fictional city would be a huge foundational change to the kinds of stories that we tell.
