The Jonathan Lethem/Farel Dalrymple/Karl Rusnak Omega the Unknown remake is one of my favorite comics ever, and it came a few years before that kind of risk-taking became so commonplace in the Marvel Universe. How did that project come about?

I had reached out to a number of popular modern authors who had expressed a love for Marvel Comics about doing something for us, and Jonathan was the person who bit. He laid his story out to Joe Quesada and myself over a lunch, and was interested in having Farel draw it based on the story Farel had done in BIZARRO COMICS. From there, the project largely ran itself over a long period of time–enough time for us to have stockpiled enough material so that the 10 issues could ship consecutively without incident. Jonathan is so smart, and his scripts felt so precise in terms of taking a novelistic approach to doing a big super hero story that there really wasn’t anything much I could do to them.
