Because we don’t like to throw the sliding timescale in your face all the time, and some creators like to play more towards the original publication dates in terms of the handling of the characters rather than what needs to be the case for the sake of the modern stories. And different fans, too, like things both ways–some of them want to remember those stories as a product of the time and the place when they were produced. This is one of those instances where the continuity needs to serve the stories, not the other way around. Being dogmatic about how this stuff is depicted would be more likely to make more readers confused and upset.
