What if instead of saying Magneto was a victim of the Holocaust, you chose a different genocide? There are unfortunately many to choose from. Maybe Kosovo or Rwanda? Just a thought.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that, as making that change represents not only a time jump but a huge change in the character’s heritage.
