  • Wondering if you've been following the launch of the music streaming service Tidal. Critics have said it's doomed to fail because its price is too high at $10. Interesting analysis by a professor on Rockonomic found that $5 was the sweet spot per month for music streaming, and by halving the price, the company could QUADRUPLE revenues. Reminds me of comics. Lower prices = more customers. Any truth to the theory? thx

Every bit of evidence that we’ve seen proves that lower prices does not equal more customers–at least not to the point where it’s enough more customers to offset the loss of revenue you’ve taken by lowering the price.

This is why the best-selling comics are not typically the cheapest selling ones, but often the most expensive ones. The cheaper books tend to cluster around the non-cheaper ones–they have no particular advantage.

I haven’t been following the stuff with Tidal, but this is what I’ve seen and know about how it works in the world of comics.
