  • I think I understand the guy's concern; wouldn't you be nervous about sleeping in the same barracks as Joe Fixit? Seriously, what was that colorist thinking?!

    That page was done in 1964, and in those days African-Americans simply did not appear in comics–it was a virtually exclusively white world. So much so that, when Gabe Jones was introduced in SGT FURY #1, the color separator made him white for the first issue, and he was a range of odd grey tones for several more years. It took people a while, especially with the limited palate of colors available in those days, to figure out how to render black skintones effectively (and I don’t know how motivated some of those color separators really were.)
