Well, sure. Anything is more complicated than that.
But while there is certainly individual taste, something that strikes a chord with a large number of readers is going to be successful, even if there are others who don’t like it.
There’s a typical elitist point of view that likes to canonize work that doesn’t find a large audience as being the stuff that’s truly good. And I can understand why; it makes the reader who knows and loves that work feel smarter and more superior than the folks around him. And, in point of fact, plenty of good and worthwhile work doesn’t attract a huge audience.
But you cannot run a company by producing work that is marginally successful. That’s a good way to go out of business.
I think it’s worth bearing in mind that, while everybody has their own opinions on what works for them, none of those opinions are absolute.
