I think that Magneto is an interesting and nuanced character, which is down to all of the work that all of those creators have done over the years. But he’s still a villain. And like most villains, he has a fatal flaw right at the core of his being that compels him to act in a certain manner. For all of his talk about safety for mutants and oppression and so forth, all of which legitimately comes out of his experiences, Magneto is also sitting on top of a powder keg of rage and hatred that he cannot get past, and which casuses him to lash out in anger even when things are going his way, seemingly. I think the DAYS OF FUTURE PAST film got that exactly right. There, despite the fact that he knows what it will bring, Fassbinder’s Magneto cannot find it in himself not to attack, not to use violence.
