but did you have to retcon all of dugan's appearances post-1966 with a robot? why invalidate all those stories he appeared in?

It doesn’t invalidate them, those stories still happened just as they did. You simply know more about what was going on behind the scenes now.And the reason for that is that, with the Marvel timescale, Dum Dum would have been in his late 80s in the earliest of those stories, which is pretty unworkable–and it’s only going to get worse as time goes on.
