  • >You’ve said in the past how it can be hard to predict whether a book will really catch fire and find its audience. That a book can work or not for any number of reasons and how great it is when it clicks with readers how you, as editor, hoped it would when the series was comissioned. You’ve also mentioned a few times how the days of the decade-long runs by a single creative team are in the past; that the industry just doesn’t work that way now. And you’ve noted that, while movies don’t dictate the books, it’s always nice to be able to tale advantage of the movies in positioning new titles (as with the new Ant Man series).

With that general premise in mind, is there any concern that Kelly Sue (by her choice or yours) will depart Captain Marvel before the film in 2018 and that any new team(s) will be unable to capture the magic of her run, leaving Marvel without (or with a much weaker) tie in to the film? >

I think this is a good question.

I think that Kelly Sue has done excellent work on CAPTAIN MARVEL. In some ways, she’s almost done better work as a spokesperson and a rallying point for fans than even as a writer.

That having been said, Carol Danvers has existed since 1968, so not only can other people write that character, they have over the years.

So it just comes down to us finding the right person with the right ideas and the right skill set to succeed Kelly Sue–which is the process that got Kelly Sue the assignment in the first place. It’s by no means a lock, but I have faith in the experience and instincts of our editors to be able to do this. We do it on a very regular basis, across all of the books in our line.

Brian Reed’s run on Ms. Marvel was pretty good. The core of the character didn’t change a lot from his run to KSD’s. I...
