A SILK book didn’t get made solely because some people sent in some letters. It got made because the sales on the issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN that introduced and featured her sold phenomenally well, and in addition to the feedback that we got from letters and posts and everything, the word from our retailers was that their customers were interested in this new character. So all of that together led to us fast-tracking a SILK series.
I don’t think you should feel like shit, and I don’t think you should view anything as specifically aimed at you that isn’t directly directed at you. There are plenty of lovely, well-behaved, articulate Marvel fans out in the world, and until proven differently, I assume that you are one of those.
As a Marvel fan, you are in essence entitled to one"vote"–the vote that you cast with your wallet and with your feet. Your vote isn’t calibrated, however, based on how strongly you feel about a particular issue, or whether all of the people in your personal circle happen to agree with you. One fan, one vote. And we make our publishing decisions, at least in part, based on the greatest good for the greatest number, and what we legitimately think stands a chance of success. Even within that, there will be disagreements among us–what i think may not be exactly what Mike Marts thinks, or what Nick Lowe thinks (let’s hope not) or Mark Paniccia thinks, or whatever. To say nothing of the people involved that you typically hear very little about, such as our Sales team. But if, as a whole, the organization thinks that it’s worth a try, then we try it. And if it doesn’t work, then we try something else.
