I am just reading an article about Julie Schwartz's revamps of Superman and Batman in the Silver Age, one that suggested Jack Schiff and Mort Weisinger had just been editing the books for too long. Obviously not being so rude to suggest you're anywhere near that point, but do you think a good editor can carry on indefinitely, or do you think regular changes are vital?
This is a good question. Clearly I hope that a good editor can carry on indefinitely, and continue to learn and adapt what they’re doing to the needs of different eras, as Mort, Jack and Julie all did. But who knows?
Julie edited FLASH for a solid 20 years (not even counting the SHOWCASE try-outs), and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA for 18, and I’m not quite there with AVENGERS yet (although I’m getting close.)
