Bill felt–and I’m paraphrasing here–that too many writers were creating story structures that were byzantine and difficult for the average reader to follow, and not for any great narrative reason. He favored a very straightforward approach, telling the story in completely linear terms. As tended to be the case during his era, he became overly dogmatic about this to the point of diminishing returns, but the original issue that he was trying to correct had merit to it.
