I know you never want a series to perform poorly, but when you're entertaining a pitch for a risky new book, do you ever ask the creator "how are you going to wrap this up if we have to cancel it?" Does the natural end of a story arc that would have been there anyway suffice?
Tends to depend on the writer, ad the experience of the editor in question. Building an ongoing series isn’t the same as building a limited series, so needing to end it abruptly is often quite difficult. So the wiser among us keep one eye towards how we might be able to end a series if it failed to catch on. But the trick is to not be so focused on that that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. You need to have confidence in the material that you’re doing.
