Do you recall why Marvel comics in the '80s and '90s had (in general, anyway) heavier use of omniscient narration and thought balloons and other such devices than their DC counterparts?

I don’t know that they did in general, if you look back at all of the DC comics of that time and not the two or three best-known works from that period. In any case, it was simply the stylistic choice of the writers of that period.
