What's better, as an editor, for you to read? A story that starts en media res or a story that gives context first? This is of course knowing full well that the author and you both have the authority/ability to change things around if you feel it doesn't work. ... Asking for a friend. Thanks!
I believe that, wherever possible, simple and straightforward is better. So start at start.
There have been talented people who have done brilliant things with byzantine story structures, but too often newer, younger writers fall in love with them because they help to disguise the lack of a beating heart at the center of their stories. They look cleverer than they often are.
