Why not just charge retailers whst u wish to charge them to 'keep the lights on' and remove the retail price from the covers. Let retailers charge what they need to. I realise that for a book raising from 2.99 to 3.99 u dont get the full dollar. Surely if u get 25c maybe let the retailer just add the 25c if they wish and it takes all the price stress off you guys.
The Retailers are free to do that anyway, as teh cover price is simply the suggested retail price. Which is why some retailers will give discounts to pull-subscription customers or mark up a rare variant cover.
