Jordan, I'm confused. Were Nova and Star-Lord ongoings or minis? the creative teams keep talking about them like they were supposed to be ongoings, but Marvel keeps talking about them like they were always planned minis. Did they "end" or were they cancelled?
I didn’t work on Nova, but on Star-Lord, the series was planned from the beginning to continue on past issue 6. Unfortunately, the sales were not there to support the book continuing. I was pretty bummed about it–I think Chip and Kris made an AMAZING book, and it’s going to be a gorgeous and heartfelt TPB when it’s collected.
Not sure where the idea that Star-Lord was always meant to end early came from…but that was not the case. I know that in the past series that were originally planned as miniseries were instead launched as ongoings which then ended after that initial arc…but even in those cases, the idea is to boost sales and have them continue on. If the sales had supported the book continuing past that initial arc, it would have continued past it. I don’t remember there ever being a case where Marvel launched a series as an ongoing instead of a mini, got high sales, and ended the book anyway. It’s possible there was one I am not thinking of…but it would probably take unusual circumstances for us to cancel a book that is doing well.
I wish me thinking book was amazing was enough to let us keep publishing it, but unfortunately, there are other matters to consider, and sales are a large part of those other matters. And please don’t think I am blaming the audience for the book being cancelled–no one is under any obligation to buy our books. On the contrary, we are under an obligation to make books you will want to buy, so feel free to lay the blame for the cancellation on me. That said, I remain proud of the series, and an glad we were able to put out the issues we did.
Not to put you on the spot, but what are your opinions on Gwenpool's appearance in Champions? For me, I understood what it was going for, in any other book Gwen would be right but as so often happens she gets the intentions of the story wrong. I thought that was clever, but I feel like we could've used more Shenanigans with her is all. Or that it's revealed like at the eleventh hour that she's half right and there are Cops who are Hydra but they have nothing to do with the racism going on.
Obviously, since it’s a book from a completely different creative team, including editorially, it’s a little different take. But I was really happy with it.
Regarding her not being right–well, to put it in Gwen’s terms, it wasn’t her book, it was theirs. Of course they were right. To put it in slightly more real terms, I think her being wrong was part of the point–she is looking at it as a comic book and saying that there needs to be an explanation for hatred, that people are not just going to be that bad on their own. But in this case, she’s wrong–people can just be bad people.
Marvel's whole policy of creating comics to make fans angry and create controversy is really backfiring when forums are locking threads about the comics. CBR mods aren't even allowing any discussion of IvX #3 preview.
We don’t make comics to make fans angry. We make comics with stories we believe in. What we’ve said is that making fans angry doesn’t usually mean lower sales–it usually means higher sales on the project. But we don’t go “What would really piss people off? Let’s do that!”
We make the best story we can, all the time, every time. Period.
We don’t always succeed, but that is always the goal.
I hear you're the person to thank for Civil War II #8 and Infamous Iron Man #3. In all seriousness, thanks for keeping my mind off recent sadness in the media. I am curious, what happened to the Rescue appearance for Infamous Iron Man #3? Have a great 2017!
